How to Verify a Contractor License and Insurance

How Do You Verify a Contractor's License and Insurance?

Search the contractor's name and license number on your state licensing board's website, and check the status and trade. For insurance, ask for a certificate of insurance sent directly by their agent, showing general liability, workers compensation and auto coverage, with you as additional insured where appropriate. Call the agent if anything looks wrong.

We do not verify licenses or insurance for the businesses listed on this site, so do this yourself before work starts.

Check the License

  1. Find the licensing board for the state and trade. Rules differ, and some trades are licensed by the city or county.
  2. Match the exact business name and license number.
  3. Check the status, expiry date and any disciplinary actions.
